This long-term project maps out the evolution of Smart City technologies in the context of the global rise of authoritarianism. The project analyses how smart city technologies reinvent ‘AI-Tocracy’, a term used by Beraja et al. (2021), or how smart city technologies reinvent a sophisticated version of authoritarianism that can be easily disguised and justified in terms of its innovation, efficiency, and precision.
